Extreme diplomatic tension around the ASEAN summit
India-US relations have sometimes been sweet, sometimes full of thorns. Especially on issues like trade policy and tariff imposition, there has been no less tension between the two countries. Ever since America imposed a tariff of up to 50 percent on Indian products, a kind of distance has been created. The Modi government has been publicly raising its voice against America. The Ministry of External Affairs has even been heard talking about finding an alternative path. Trump has not stopped either, he has been warning of imposing more tariffs. At that time, India-US relations had practically reached a standstill.
However, the situation has changed rapidly. Recently, Trump’s tone has softened a lot. He even had a phone conversation with Modi. Both leaders have given positive messages to each other. And so their possible meeting has come under discussion again.
In this atmosphere, the 47th ASEAN summit is going to be held in Malaysia. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has already confirmed the participation of former US President Trump in this forum of ASEAN, one of the most powerful nations in Asia. Now all eyes are on one place, will Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi attend directly? Or will he send a representative?
Modi himself has attended the ASEAN summit in the past. Therefore, a large part of the political circle believes that he will attend this time as well. And if that happens, the much-discussed Modi-Trump meeting may take place on the sidelines of the summit. According to experts, this meeting may be very important in normalizing relations between the two countries and resolving the trade agreement issue.
It is worth noting that the two leaders were supposed to meet at the UN General Assembly in September. But at that time, due to the high tension between the two countries, Modi canceled his visit to America at the last minute. As a result, the international community is now fully focused on the ASEAN summit in October.

India and America are the two largest democracies in the world. But their relationship has repeatedly fluctuated over trade policy, tariffs, and even diplomatic positions. As a result, diplomatic circles believe that the possible Modi-Trump meeting in October is not just a meeting, but a defining moment for the future relationship between the two countries.
The two leaders have called themselves “friends” in the past. However, the question is, will the story of that friendship begin anew on the stage of Malaysia? Or will the clouds of the trade war darken the sky of the relationship again?
