Various drugs and injections are available in the market for weight loss, but scientists now say that the real medicine is hidden inside our bodies. Researchers at Duke University in America have revealed such surprising information. According to them, some cells in the body can produce alternatives to drugs like Ozempic or Vegovi on their own.
The pancreas contains numerous alpha cells, which are part of the ‘Islets of Langerhans’. Until now, it was believed that these cells only secrete the hormone glucagon, which increases blood sugar levels and helps control hypoglycemia.
But new research says that alpha cells are capable of producing not only glucagon, but also another important hormone – GLP-1. This GLP-1 hormone mainly works in the process of weight loss. The drug called Ozempic or Vegovi actually activates this hormone and helps in shedding excess fat from the body.
That is, instead of taking medicine from outside, our body can make that “magic pill” itself!
Why doesn’t the body lose weight on its own?

Now the question may arise, if the body can produce this hormone itself, then how has the problem of obesity increased so much? The answer lies in two enzymes.
- PC2 – is usually active in the production of glucagon.
- PC1 – when it starts working, the GLP-1 hormone is produced.
But the problem is, most of the time PC2 is dominant, as a result of which PC1 cannot do much work. Therefore, GLP-1 is not produced in sufficient quantities and the body cannot shed excess fat.
Scientists have found that if the PC1 enzyme can be activated in some way, the body can produce a drug within itself, which will reduce fat on the one hand, and also control blood sugar on the other hand. This means –
Obesity will decrease, the risk of diabetes will also decrease.

Currently, this experiment has been successful in mice. However, only after applying it to humans can we say for sure whether the best weight loss medicine of the future will really be made from body cells.
