A bizarre incident occurred Wednesday night at LaGuardia Airport, one of New York’s busiest airports. Two Delta Air Lines regional jets collided while parked on the taxiway. The wing of one plane hit the cockpit glass of the other plane in the collision.
Delta Air Lines said both planes were CRJ-900 jets operated by its regional subsidiary Endeavor Air.
Flight 5047, which had just landed from Charlotte, North Carolina, was taxiing to a parking lot along the taxiway.
Flight 5155, which was preparing to depart for Roanoke, Virginia, had its right wing hit the cockpit of Flight 5047, which was parked in front of it.
Shortly after the incident, the pilot of Flight 5047 can be heard in air traffic control audio posted on LiveATC.net, saying — “The right wing of the plane in front of us just smashed into our nose and the cockpit windscreen.”
The collision injured a crew member on Flight 5155 in the knee. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the injured person was taken to a hospital. Fortunately, no other passengers or crew members were seriously injured.
Delta said – There were 57 passengers on the flight from Charlotte. There were 28 passengers on the flight to Roanoke.
All passengers were safely disembarked and later taken to the terminal by bus. They were provided with hotel rooms and meals, according to the airline.
Delta said in a statement – “The safety of our customers and the public is our top priority. We are working closely with the relevant authorities to determine how this accident occurred. We sincerely regret this experience.
The incident did not significantly impact normal operations at LaGuardia Airport. Flight schedules continued as usual. However, the panicked reactions of passengers have sparked a lot of discussion on social media.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has been asked for details of the incident, but due to the partial US government shutdown, their official response has not yet been received.
Overall, while this accident did not result in any major fatalities, it raises new questions about passenger safety. This incident is a reminder of the need for greater caution and coordination when operating aircraft, especially on busy taxiways.
