The deadline for filing income tax returns (ITR) is approaching on September 15, 2025. Just a day before this crucial deadline, the tax department has given an important update on social media. More than 6 crore ITRs have been filed so far for the assessment year 2025-26.

Tax department appeals for help

The Income Tax Department has thanked taxpayers and tax professionals through a post on its official social media platform. It said that it is grateful to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping it touch the milestone of filing 6 crore income tax returns (ITRs).

The department also said that it has kept its helpdesk active 24X7 to avoid last-minute rush. Help is available through phone calls, live chat, Webex sessions for ITR filing, tax payment, and other assistance. Those who have not yet filed their ITRs are requested to complete the task quickly.

Speculation about extension of deadline

As the deadline approaches, there is a lot of discussion about whether the ITR filing deadline will be extended. However, no program has been announced by the tax department in this regard so far. Therefore, ITR should be filed as soon as possible, considering September 15 as the final deadline.

Reason behind the change in deadline

It is worth noting that in May, the Income Tax Department extended the last date for filing ITR from July 31, 2025 to September 15, 2025. The reason for this was that some major changes have been made in the notified ITR and additional time is required to prepare the system and utilities accordingly.

Important Tip

To avoid last-minute problems or server slowdown, you should file your ITR before the deadline. In case of any complications, you should take help from the tax department’s 24X7 helpdesk.

September 15 is the final date so far. If there is no change, filing after this may result in a penalty. This should be kept in mind.
