A new milestone has been set for anime fans. Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie Infinity Castle has become not only the highest-grossing anime film of all time, but also the most successful film in the history of Japanese cinema.

Infinity Castle is the first installment in a planned trilogy, which is based on an iconic arc in Koyoharu Gotouji’s popular Demon Slayer manga. The story centers on Tanjiro Kamado and his sister Nezuko, who embark on a journey of revenge and redemption after losing their family to demons.

The previous film Mugen Train 2020 was a huge success at the box office, and Infinity Castle has surpassed that record by a long way.

United States and Canada – Earned $104.73 million in just nine days of release, far surpassing the previous record holder, Pokémon: The First Movie in 1999.

Japan – Has rocked the box office since its release on July 18. It earned $5.52 billion yen in its first three days, making it the biggest opening in Japanese cinema history. By mid-September, the collection stood at $34.01 billion yen, the second highest in the country.

Europe – Earned $8.6 million in France and $8.2 million in Germany, becoming the highest-grossing anime of all time in both countries.

The film currently has a worldwide gross of $665 million, surpassing such timeless hits as Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away $395 million and Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name 405 million . Even the franchise’s own hit Mugen Train $506 million is now behind.

One of the biggest reasons behind Infinity Castle’s box office magic was its theatrical-focused release strategy. Crunchyroll confirmed that the film won’t hit streaming platforms until 2026, which has led to a huge crowd flocking to the theaters.

The film has also received rave reviews from critics. Its art style has also won the hearts of the audience, as evidenced by its 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 69% on Metacritic.
